Background of the study:
Commercial motorcycle transportation has long been a critical component of urban mobility and economic activity in many Nigerian cities. In Ikorodu Local Government Area, Lagos State, commercial motorcycle (okada) services have provided affordable transport and generated significant employment. However, recent bans on these services, implemented to improve road safety and reduce traffic congestion, have raised concerns regarding their broader economic implications (Abiola, 2023). Studies indicate that while such bans may yield benefits in terms of public safety, they also disrupt the livelihoods of motorcycle riders and ancillary businesses (Femi, 2024). The resultant loss of income for riders, coupled with the increased reliance on alternative transport modes, poses challenges for local economies that heavily depend on informal transportation sectors (Adewale, 2025). This investigation seeks to critically evaluate the economic fallout of commercial motorcycle bans in Ikorodu, analyzing how the loss of a vital income source affects both individual livelihoods and the broader urban economic ecosystem. Insights from this study may help policymakers balance safety concerns with economic sustainability (Abiola, 2023).
Statement of the problem:
The commercial motorcycle ban in Ikorodu has led to significant disruptions in the local transport economy, adversely impacting the income and employment of motorcycle riders and related service providers. This policy intervention, while aimed at improving safety, has inadvertently created economic hardships and reduced mobility options for residents (Femi, 2024).

Significance of the study:
This study is significant because it provides empirical evidence on the economic impacts of transportation policy changes, assisting local authorities and policymakers in designing measures that protect public safety without compromising livelihoods (Akinyemi, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study focuses on the economic implications of the commercial motorcycle ban in Ikorodu Local Government Area. It does not consider other transportation modes or regions. Limitations include reliance on self-reported income data and local policy variations.
